Physics 5 The Universe with Prof. D. Tytler

Homework 6, due June 1 in class

We encourage you to work together, to discuss the topics and solutions, but your answers must use all of your own words, calculations and diagrams.

You must not hand in work copied from someone else.

Please write down the code numbers of all in your study group.

The goal of the first two questions is revision for the exams. Your answers will differ from those on H4 because we have covered more topics.

  1. Please write a 3 paragraph summary of the topics which we covered in class, up to and including May 25th. Each paragraph should cover only one main topic, and it must begin with a sentence introducing and summarizing that whole paragraph.
  2. Write three original questions you might expect to find on the second midterm. Include only topics which did NOT arise on the first midterm. Use the first midterm, homework and questions in the book as models. Your questions may be variations on existing questions, but they should not be identical to, or trivial variations (e.g. swap Mars for Jupiter..) of any in the book, or homework.
  3.

The goal of the following Qs is to help you preview the material we will cover in class. We recommend that you read the following:

title of the chapter, the opening paragraph on the chapter title page

the questions below the heading: "in this chapter you will find the answers to the following questions"

    the section headings

the titles of the figures, tables and boxes

    list of keywords

list of key ideas at the end of the chapter

You do not need to study all these topics now, but you should make sure you know the meanings of the words and questions.

  4. What is a star?
  5. Why is Jupiter not a star?
  6. Which two parameters explain most of the variety amongst stars?
  7. Discuss in very broad terms the statement: "the sun is a typical star".
  8. Write two multiple choice exam questions: one each for chapters 18 and 19.
